Part 2 of “Close…But No Cigar”

Ok so last week we posted this article: “Close…But No Cigar!” and promised to follow up and share with you some of the crucial steps he missed while removing is mould problem
For those of you who missed the article, Click Here and have a read…then come back and see what we have to say!

So What Did He Miss?

Well for starters, he didn’t have any Negative Air Machines with HEPA filtration set up in the room. The point behind this is that while you are removing the mold and sending spores into the air, the Negative Air Machines captures the spores and traps them in the HEPA filter! You can bet that he sent an amazing amount of spores flying through the air, regardless of how delicate he was while removing the mold infested drywall. These spores would have remained present long after his containment came down and free to circulate to other parts of his house once his furnace, A/C and HVAC were turned back on!
Second, once all of the mold contaminated materials were removed, he should have used a HEPA vacuum to clean all the walls, ceiling, floor, anything and everything in that room.
Third, now we are just assuming but, along with turning off air circulation units in his home…all air ducts should have also been sealed to prevent mold from settling inside duct work.
The fourth “faux pas” was not taping his gloves to his Tyvek suit! Very important to minize and if possible, completely eliminate any possible mold exposure to skin!
5th…once his mold is removed, he feels it safe enough to remove his gloves AND his mask! Big “no, no” seeing as he just finished disturbing mold (see above 1st “faux pas”), sending spores to fly freely about the room and putting himself in a situation where he is breathing it in!
Finally, he doesn’t talk about doing Clearance Air Sampling to make sure that the mold spore count in that room is back to a normal fungal ecology. We are willing to bet that it wasn’t!
That, in a nutshell, is what we quickly observed! The lesson here is that you should always contact a professional Mold/Mould remediation company before tackling a project like this. Most companies will be more than happy to give you the right advice…like us!
