How Many People Die From Asbestos Each Year?
Discussing death is a topic that most people want to avoid. However, the fact of the matter is asbestos related diseases such as asbestosis and mesothelioma kill people each and every day.
According to the World Heath Organization 107,000 people die each year from asbestos-related lung cancer, mesothelioma and asbestosis resulting from occupational exposure.
This means that approximately 294 people die daily from asbestos. Every hour 12 people die because of asbestos. One death every 5 minutes!
Should asbestos be banned? Absolutely!
Sadly, however, about 125 million people in the world are exposed to asbestos at the workplace, meaning death from asbestos will continue.
You can do something about this situation! The Internet has mobilized concerned citizens and is gaining momentum. At the forefront of this campaign is the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO), an independent organization founded in 2004 to give asbestos victims and concerned citizens a united voice to raise public awareness about the dangers of asbestos exposure. Please visit the ADAO site and sign the many petitions they have set up for banning asbestos around the world. Also, join the ADAO’s “Light a Candle” campaign to honor victims of asbestos disease.
Make yourself heard, join us in our efforts. Please share this article with your friends, family, and colleagues, so that we can continue to spread the word and increase awareness.
